Self Study Tips For Students During Lockdown

During trying times like these, when our lives have come to a temporary halt, students all over the world are finding themselves utterly confused. With all the online classes, online assignments and even online exams, kids these days have a lot more on their plates than any of us. Even though taking classes and attending exams in the comforts and safety of your home may seem like an easy thing to do, it is direly affecting the mental and physical health of the kids. As we all struggle to adjust to the new normal, the students find it tougher, as their studies and schoolwork are on the line. Here are some tips to help students study on their own, this lockdown:
• Set your goals
Set some realistic, achievable goals for yourself. It could be daily, weekly or monthly goals. Write it down somewhere you’ll be able to see. Check off whatever you have achieved. Setting a study goal also includes setting a study plan. Create a complete list of all your subjects, lessons and the syllabus to be covered. Assign dates or timeslots based on how you would like to go through the entire study material.
• Create a workspace for yourself
Creating a personalised workspace with lots of light and fresh air is important so that you can go through your studies without getting bored or distracted. You can decorate the area with some plants or pictures or quotes to motivate you. You can also put up your schedule and goals for you to see. Have a sturdy table and chair so that you will be comfortable and not strained. Make sure you have all of your study material and stationery right there, so that you do not have to keep getting up from your place all the time.
• Take down notes
While listening to any lecture, let alone online lectures, it is very important to take down notes. Note down points from the lecture and make sure to highlight the important ones. Using highlighters and coloured pens is a fun and creative way to keep your notes looking attractive and not boring. Mark the important lines while you are going through your textbooks. Keep in mind that you need not write down everything your teacher says, word-by-word. Instead, try to use your own words, or how you have interpreted the lesson. Note down new words, and try to find out their meanings. Using a small note pad to scribble down mathematical formulae is also another idea,
• Attend mock tests
One way to evaluate what you have studied is to take mock exams. These tests will prepare you for the real ones. You can look up these tests online, or you can try to solve some of the previous years’ question papers. Try to set a time limit just like a real exam, so that you can also work on your time management. On completion, check the answers yourself and find out where you have gone wrong. Do not cheat, as this is an exam that you are conducting to evaluate yourself critically.
• Limit social media
Social media is one of the most time-consuming and distracting things for a student. Once you start scrolling through these apps, you lose all sense of time. Limit your social media usage to a short period, during the breaks you take from studying. Keep your phone or any device that you use social media on away from you while you are studying. Using apps that help you focus more on your tasks and less on your phone is a good idea.
• Find time to relax
Make sure that you are not over-working yourself. As much as you need to study, you also need to find time for yourself. Keep a relaxed state of mind and find some activities to destress your mind. Taking intervals between studying to refresh yourself will surely help you to be more productive. Take this time and try to meditate, pray or indulge in some fun activities. Skipping meals and sleeping late is a big no.
